All sounds gathered by zan + zurich in and around the smithsonian museums in washington d.c. on labor day 2001.

ZANOISECT's "Muzeum of Frenzy" is the effect of operations on the field recordings made "at various museums of the Smithsonian Institution on cheap portable tape recorders by zan hoffman & jeff surak". In regards to the sound source, the recording is not revealing, but quite interesting nevertheless. The guys concocted a decent collage, consisting of three parts. The first, mixed by Zan, is genuinely a noise one, but the other two, mixed by Jeff, are definitely more varied. The sound seems "broad" and "deep", there is less of noise and more of "noisescape" to it. To the last part, the term "noise" is hardly applicable, and the input material of the field recordings seems least treated and mixed. As a whole it is quite intriguing, the first track being slightly inferior to the other." was created just using portable tape decks, gathering sounds, with my buddy Zurich, in and around the museums on the mall downtown. These in turn were processed and finally composed for the 59th Zanoisect work of frenzied lovelyness.

Charvaka Enters Hastinapura

Charvaka:
A wicked Rakshasa who fought a battle in the Mahabharata and entered Hastinapura in triumph. However, the Brahmins discovered he was an impostor so they killed him with a deadly ray from their eyes.

Hastinapura:
The capital city of central India in the days of the great war of the Mahabharata.

Rakshasa:
an evil spirit, a demon

Mahabharata:
The great Hindu epic of the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, which is composed of (a stunning) 220,000 lines.

I was thinking about this as i first dreamed of what i could do with it... so i guess in the long run i acted on my initial impulse... and i felt the release could yeild hours on end of stuff because it’s intense and saturated. i wanted to not simply allow the jorge castro tape to play from one end to the next unaltered... that would be yesterday’s answer, mix it with something else... i was thinking it needed this and that added to get to where i wanted it to be, but that was a blind alley. so i disected it instead.

the results sound like Charvaka hacking his way to victory - entering Hastinapura in celebration only to be destroyed by the deadly eye rays.

Music For Falling Off Logs By" and Sounds For Falling Off Logs By... are from late 97 and early 98 respectively. These are recordings which I did not think of as releases when I was creating them, but when listening back I found I had something wonderful. "Sounds" is a long awaited ambient work. I had been wanting to do one for quite some time and whenever I tried the result was much too intense (but still great!), and this time I did it without even knowing I was doing it. This was part of a 3 tape session that I did one day, and as I was listening back to each, planning what to do with the pieces, this one refused to take anything else. It was just fine as is.
